A gunman was shot and wounded by police Monday after firing outside a Hebrew school in Memphis, Tennessee, officials said.

The Memphis Police Department received a call shortly after noon on Monday about an unidentified White man who reportedly fired his handgun outside the Margolin Hebrew Academy, police said in a statement. The suspect fled the scene in a maroon pickup truck with California plates before police arrived.

Officers were able to track the vehicle to Bartlett, where they conducted a traffic stop. During the stop, the suspect allegedly fired a gun and was shot by an officer. He is currently in critical condition.

Assistant Police Chief Don Crowe said, “Thankfully, that school had a great safety procedure and process in place and avoided anyone being harmed or injured at that scene.”

The investigation is ongoing and police are still trying to determine the suspect’s motive. No other injuries were reported. The identity of the suspect has not yet been released.
