A man who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 and stole a framed photo of the late civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis from then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office was sentenced to more than four years in federal prison on Friday.
Kevin Lyons, 40, was sentenced to 51 months in federal prison after he was found guilty in April of six federal charges, including a felony charge of obstruction of an official proceeding.
U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell said it was very rare for her to have a defendant appear before her who described their childhood as “perfect,” as Lyons did.
Lyons traveled from his home in Chicago to the Capitol, posting on his Instagram a screenshot of a map tracing the route, according to his charging documents. He recorded himself in Pelosi’s office and later posted the video to his Instagram account, where he referred to himself as an “idiot.”
In addition to the 51-month prison sentence, Lyons was also sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment. He was also ordered to pay restitution for the items he stole, including the framed photo of Rep. Lewis.
