On Monday, tragedy struck in Indianapolis when Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy John Durm, 61, was assaulted by an inmate while transporting him to a hospital visit. The inmate, Orlando Mitchell, 34, attacked Durm while the van was inside the sally port of the Adult Detention Center on the city’s south side. Durm was taken to Eskenazi Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

After the attack, Mitchell stole the van and crashed it into a utility pole. Other deputies were able to apprehend him and return him to custody.

Sheriff Kerry Forestal released a statement expressing his condolences for Durm’s family and friends, saying, “Deputy Durm was a dedicated public servant who was committed to protecting the citizens of Marion County. His service to our community will not be forgotten.”

The Marion County Sheriff’s Department has launched an investigation into the incident. No further details have been released at this time.
