Jesse Ehrenfeld, New President of the American Medical Association, Supports President Biden’s Initiatives to Reduce Health Care Costs.

The American Medical Association (AMA) has elected Jesse Ehrenfeld as its new president, and he has declared that “we have a health care system in crisis.” President Joe Biden is taking steps to address the crisis, unveiling a set of initiatives on Friday to reduce health care costs.

The Department of Health and Human Services has estimated that 18.7 million older adults and other Medicare beneficiaries will save an estimated $400 per year in prescription drug costs in 2025 due to the president’s cap on out-of-pocket spending as part of last year’s Inflation Reduction Act.

President Biden is scheduled to deliver remarks from the White House on Friday afternoon about the latest actions his administration is taking to lower health care costs and limit so-called insurance junk fees to consumers. The proposed rules will close loopholes that let companies offer “misleading insurance products that can discriminate based on pre-existing conditions and trick consumers into buying products that provide little or no coverage when they need it most.”

The AMA’s new president, Jesse Ehrenfeld, is a professor of anesthesiology, biomedical informatics, and surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He has been a leader in the field of health care quality and safety, and has served on the AMA Board of Trustees since 2017.
