A lawyer for Hunter Biden has accused congressional Republicans of attempting to undermine the plea deal recently reached between President Biden’s son and prosecutors by pushing forward what he described as “false allegations” from IRS whistleblowers.

Abbe Lowell, Hunter Biden’s attorney, made the accusation in response to the disclosures made by IRS supervisor Gary Shapley in a six-hour closed-door appearance before the House Ways and Means Committee last month. Lowell said that the timing of the agents’ leaks and Biden’s subsequent decision to release their statements was not innocent, coming shortly after a public filing indicating the disposition of the five-year investigation of Mr. Biden.

Shapley, who examined Hunter Biden’s tax records and worked with the federal government on the case, told the House that he obtained messages Hunter Biden sent on the WhatsApp platform, including one in 2017 that he read demanding payment from a Chinese businessman named Henry Zhao.

The plea agreement between Hunter Biden and prosecutors was reached last week, and Lowell has accused Republicans of attempting to undermine it by pushing forward false allegations from IRS whistleblowers. He has called for an investigation into the timing of the agents’ leaks and Biden’s subsequent decision to release their statements.

The Biden administration has yet to comment on the accusations made by Lowell. It remains to be seen how the allegations will affect the plea agreement between Hunter Biden and prosecutors.
