House Republican leaders have requested documents and communications from the White House regarding Hunter Biden's decision not to comply with a congressional subpoena for a deposition, as part of the House's impeachment inquiry into President Biden. The letter to White House counsel Edward Siskel asks for documents and communications between White House staff and Hunter Biden or his lawyers, as well as any records sent or received by any other person or entity. The White House is expected to respond to the request in the coming days.
Lesley Wolf, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney, defended her work in a closed-door deposition with congressional investigators on Thursday, despite facing threats and harassment. She said that she was legally obligated not to address specific allegations made by IRS whistleblowers due to Justice Department policies. Wolf also accused Republicans of coddling the president’s son Hunter Biden, and said that the truth has become collateral damage in today's political climate.
Hunter Biden has offered to testify in a public hearing before the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees in response to a subpoena issued by the GOP-led House Oversight Committee. He has refused to comply with the subpoena, instead opting to answer questions from lawmakers in a public setting. House Republicans have rejected the offer, saying they want him to testify privately first. It is unclear how the committees will respond to Hunter Biden's offer.
House Republicans are set to vote Wednesday to formally authorize an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. The resolution, if passed, would declare that any subpoenas issued after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy declared the inquiry on September 27th would carry the same legal weight as those issued after the vote. Democrats have argued that the inquiry is a waste of time and resources, and the vote is expected to be close, as Republicans can only afford three defections for the resolution to pass.
Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, has been indicted on nine federal tax-related charges, including three felony counts. The charges allege that Hunter Biden failed to pay taxes, failed to file, evaded an assessment and filed a fraudulent form, resulting in a four-year scheme to not pay at least $1.4 million in federal income taxes. If convicted, Hunter Biden could face up to five years in prison for each of the three felony counts and a maximum of one year in prison for each of the six misdemeanor counts. The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California.
