A New York man was arrested and charged with murder on Monday after allegedly shooting his 3-week-old infant daughter with a crossbow.
According to a news release from the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, Patrick D. Proefriedt, 26, allegedly got into an argument with his wife while she was holding their daughter in a Colesville, New York, home around 5:10 a.m. Proefriedt then allegedly fired a bolt at his wife, which hit the baby in the upper torso and exited near her armpit before hitting her mother in the chest.
The sheriff’s office said Proefriedt then allegedly removed the bolt and attempted to stop his wife from calling 911 before fleeing the scene in a red pickup truck.
The baby was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Proefriedt was later arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He is currently being held in Broome County Jail without bail.
