Ukrainian forces have made a major breakthrough in their counteroffensive against Russian-occupied areas in the Zaporizhzhia region, according to a Russian-installed official.

Vladimir Rogov, a member of the military-civilian administration for the Russian-occupied areas of Zaporizhzhia, said in a Telegram post that the settlement of Piatykhatky was under Ukrainian operational control after a series of “wave attacks” by the Ukrainian military.

The update reported that despite the “colossal losses” suffered by the Ukrainian forces, the offensive yielded a result. This is one of the first gains made by Ukraine since it launched its counteroffensive earlier this month.

The U.K. military officials said in their regular assessment that Russian losses are probably at their highest level since the peak of the battle for Bakhmut in March. The officials also said that Ukrainian forces have made small advances, but that Russian forces are conducting “relatively effective defensive operations” in Ukraine’s south.

The Ukrainian counteroffensive is ongoing, and it remains to be seen if the Ukrainian forces can continue to make gains against the Russian-occupied areas.
