West Virginia University men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins has resigned following his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving in Pittsburgh.

In a statement posted on the team website Saturday night, Huggins said he had submitted his letter of resignation to university officials. He apologized for his conduct and said he had let the university community, particularly the student-athletes, coaches and staff in the program, down.

Huggins was charged with driving under the influence on Friday night after his SUV had stopped in the middle of traffic in Pittsburgh with a shredded tire. According to a criminal complaint, a breath test determined Huggins’ blood alcohol content was 0.21%, more than twice the legal limit.

The 69-year-old Huggins had been the head coach of the West Virginia men’s basketball team since 2007. During his tenure, the Mountaineers won nine NCAA tournament games and made four Sweet 16 appearances.

West Virginia University has not yet announced who will take over as head coach of the men’s basketball team. In the meantime, the university will be conducting a search for a new coach to lead the program.
