The Cessna plane had taken off from Elizabethton, Tennessee, at 1:13 p.m. ET and was headed northeast towards Long Island when it entered restricted airspace around Washington, D.C. Fighter jets were scrambled to intercept the plane and pilots reported seeing the pilot slumped over in the craft.
The plane then turned around near New York City and was headed back south when fighter jets from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland were sent to intercept it. The plane crashed shortly after, leaving behind “highly fragmented” wreckage.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the pilot and three passengers were killed in the crash and that the plane was “destroyed”. The wreckage is expected to take days to gather and sort.
John Rumpel, speaking to The New York Times, said his daughter, one of the passengers, was an experienced pilot and had flown the plane from Tennessee to New York before. He said he was “devastated” by the news.
