Steve Bannon, the former chief strategist of President Donald Trump, will stand trial next May on charges of fraud related to a fundraiser for a wall along the U.S. southern border.

On Thursday, a New York judge set the trial date for May 27, 2024, in a Manhattan courtroom. Bannon is accused of defrauding donors who gave money to the fundraiser, which was organized by an organization called We Build the Wall.

According to the office of Manhattan District Attorney, the fundraiser, which raised more than $25 million for a U.S.-Mexico border barrier, was “based on false promises.” Bannon, 69, pleaded not guilty last September following his indictment on state money laundering, conspiracy, fraud and other charges.

The trial is scheduled to take place right after the former president is set to stand trial in the same courtroom in an unrelated criminal case. Bannon has denied all the charges against him.

The case has attracted widespread attention, as it is seen as a test of the legal system’s ability to hold powerful people accountable for their actions. It is also seen as a test of the Trump administration’s efforts to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
