Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for president in 2024 on Monday. Scott, the only Black Republican in the Senate, declared “I am America” as he blasted the “radical left” for “pushing us into a culture of grievances instead of a culture of greatness” in a roughly 40-minute speech.

Scott joins a rapidly expanding field of contenders looking to unseat former President Donald Trump, the current Republican frontrunner who holds a commanding lead in GOP primary polls. Scott’s bid has been months in the works as he teased his announcement in recent weeks, first announcing an exploratory committee in April and then officially filing the paperwork Friday to run.

In his speech, Scott criticized President Biden, whom he called “weak,” and what he described as a “nation in retreat.” He also criticized the “liberal lie that our country is evil,” saying he is the “candidate the far left fears the most.”

Scott emphasized his personal background, his family and the “miracle of America” in his speech. He said he was inspired by his mother, who worked multiple jobs to support her family, and his father, who served in the military. He also discussed his experience growing up in poverty and his rise to success.

The South Carolina senator’s announcement comes as the Republican Party is in the midst of a heated debate over its future direction. With Scott’s candidacy, the GOP is sure to have a strong contender in the 2024 presidential race.
