Brittney Griner Returns to Court After 10 Months of Detainment in Russia, Makes Impact in Preseason Game Against Los Angeles Sparks

After nearly 10 months of detainment in Russia on drug-related charges, Brittney Griner returned to game action with the Phoenix Mercury in a WNBA preseason game against the Los Angeles Sparks on Friday night. Griner, a seven-time All-Star, missed the entire 2022 season due to her detainment, which ended with a prisoner swap in December.

Before the game, Griner strolled down the sideline, giving hugs and high-fiving her teammates, coaches and opposing players. She expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to be back on the court.

“I’m grateful to be here, that’s for sure,” Griner said. “I’m not going to take a day for granted.”

Griner was able to make an impact in her first game back, finishing with 10 points and three rebounds. Her presence on the court was a welcomed sight for the Mercury, who had to play without her for the entire 2022 season.

The Mercury ultimately lost the game to the Sparks, but the result was secondary to the joy of having Griner back on the court. After a long and difficult journey, she was finally able to return to the game she loves.
