The Arizona Supreme Court has fined attorneys for Kari Lake, the 2022 Republican candidate for governor, for making false claims about the November election.

The court ordered Lake’s attorneys to pay $2,000 for repeating “unequivocally false” statements in court. The ruling came in response to a request by Gov. Katie Hobbs (D) and Secretary of State Adrian Fontes (D) to sanction Lake and her lawyers for falsely saying that over 35,000 ballots were sent to a third-party processing facility to be included in the final tally for Maricopa County.

Chief Justice Robert Brutinel wrote that Lake continued to repeat the claim that 35,563 unaccounted ballots were added to the final tally, even after the Supreme Court “concluded and expressly stated that the assertion was unsupported.”

The election results showed that Gov. Hobbs won the election by a margin of approximately 17,000 votes.

In a statement, Gov. Hobbs said, “I am pleased that the court has taken action to ensure that false and misleading information is not used to undermine the integrity of our elections.”

The Arizona Supreme Court’s ruling serves as a reminder that false claims about elections will not be tolerated. It is important that all citizens have faith in the electoral process and that any false claims are addressed swiftly and decisively.
