Barbie, the iconic doll brand owned by Mattel, has released a new doll honoring Hollywood icon Anna May Wong. The doll was released in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

Anna Wong, the niece of Anna May Wong, worked with Barbie for the last year to develop the doll. Anna Wong said that the doll honors her aunt but is more than that. She said that she is proud that her nieces will now be able to have Barbies that look different.

Lisa McKnight, executive vice president and global head of Barbie & Dolls at Mattel, said that the company was “proud to continue to increase representation in the toy aisle.” She said in a statement that they were “thrilled to share the journey of an incredible icon who was at the forefront of inclusive progress in Hollywood.”

Anna Wong never met her aunt but said she remembered seeing her photos hanging in her home. She said that the doll is an “incredible tribute to my aunt.”

The Anna May Wong Barbie doll is the latest in a series of dolls released by Barbie to honor iconic figures. Other dolls released in the series include Frida Kahlo, Amelia Earhart, and Katherine Johnson. The doll is available for purchase on the Barbie website.
