Fox News announced Monday that it is parting ways with far-right prime-time host Tucker Carlson. The cable news giant said that Carlson’s last program was Friday, April 21, and that starting Monday evening, the network will air its show “Fox News Tonight” as “an interim show helmed by rotating FOX News personalities until a new host is named.”

Fox News did not say why it’s parting ways with the host, who has become known for his strident racism, homophobia, xenophobia and misogyny, and for leaning increasingly into white nationalist talking points. Carlson’s abrupt departure comes less than a week after Fox reached a $787.5 million settlement with Dominion Voting.

Carlson was a top-rated host for the network, drawing 334,000 viewers in the coveted 25- to 54-year-old demographic in the 8 p.m. slot for the week ended April 20, according to AdWeek. That was more than twice the audience of his competitors at CNN and MSNBC in the same hour, and also represented a bigger audience than other Fox News hosts such as Sean Hannity or Laura Ingraham.

Fox Corporation shares dropped on Monday after the media company said in a terse comment that it is parting ways with star host Tucker Carlson. “We thank him for his service to the network as a host and prior to that as a contributor,” a statement by the conservative network read.

It is unclear who will replace Carlson as the host of Fox News’ 8 p.m. slot. Fox News has said that it will air its show “Fox News Tonight” as “an interim show helmed by rotating FOX News personalities until a new host is named.”
