A 20-year-old woman was fatally shot Saturday night in upstate New York after mistakenly turning into the wrong driveway while looking for a friend’s house, authorities said Monday.

Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy said in a press conference Monday that Kaylin Gillis was in a car with three others when they pulled into the wrong driveway on Paterson Hill Road in Hebron. After realizing their mistake, the group was leaving when 65-year-old Kevin Monahan came out of his porch and fired two shots, one of which struck the vehicle Gillis was in.

Murphy said Monahan has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with Gillis’ death. He added that it is an easy area to get lost in and the group was in the driveway for a very short time.

Gillis’ family released a statement Monday, saying they were “devastated” by her death.

“Kaylin was a beautiful, kind, and loving young woman who was taken from us far too soon,” the statement said. “We are still trying to process this tragedy and ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

The investigation is ongoing and no further details have been released.
