Farmington, New Mexico – On Wednesday night, Farmington Police officers responded to a domestic violence call and mistakenly went to the wrong address, resulting in a fatal shooting of the homeowner.

The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. at the home of Robert Dotson, 52, located about 150 miles northwest of Albuquerque. According to the New Mexico State Police, who are investigating the shooting, officers approached the wrong residence and Dotson opened the door holding a handgun. He was then fatally shot by the officers.

Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe released a video on Thursday expressing his condolences to Dotson’s family and acknowledging that officers had gone to the wrong address. He called the incident “unbelievably tragic.”

The New Mexico State Police are currently investigating the shooting. No further details have been released at this time.
