Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced on Tuesday that former President Donald Trump has been charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in connection with an alleged scheme to cover up two affairs with hush money payments. This is the first time in U.S. history that a president has faced criminal accountability.

At a Tuesday press conference, Bragg said that under New York law, falsifying business records is a felony if it is done in order to influence an election. The indictment and statement of facts unveiled by Bragg says that Trump falsified Trump Organization records to “conceal criminal conduct that hid damaging information from the voting public during the 2016 presidential election.”

The charges come after a lengthy investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office into the alleged hush money payments. The investigation began in 2018 and has resulted in several other indictments and convictions, including those of Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen and former campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has repeatedly called the investigation a “witch hunt.” He is currently facing a separate criminal investigation in Georgia related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. It is unclear how the charges in New York will affect the Georgia investigation.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s office has not yet commented on the potential sentence for Trump if he is convicted of the charges.
