The FBI confirmed an agent-involved shooting in Knoxville, Tennessee on Monday afternoon, resulting in the death of Roy McGrath, former chief of staff to Maryland Governor Larry Hogan (R).

McGrath had been on the run for three weeks after failing to appear for a trial in U.S. District Court in Baltimore on fraud and embezzlement charges. He was wanted in connection with an alleged scheme to bilk Maryland out of more than $276,000.

Joseph Murtha, an attorney for McGrath’s wife, told The Washington Post that the loss of McGrath’s life is an absolute tragedy. “Roy never wavered about his innocence,” Murtha said.

The FBI has not released any details about the incident, including whether McGrath died of a self-inflicted wound or during an exchange of gunfire with federal agents.

McGrath served as Hogan’s top aide for a few months during the summer of 2020. His death marks the end of a three-week manhunt that began when he failed to appear for his trial.
