CIUDAD VICTORIA, Mexico (AP) — Tragedy has struck the border town of Matamoros, Mexico, as two of the four Americans who were kidnapped last week were found dead.

The incident occurred on Friday, March 3, when four Americans crossed the border from Texas into Mexico to purchase medicine. Upon their arrival, they were caught in the crossfire between two armed groups, and were subsequently kidnapped.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador confirmed the incident, and said that ambulances and security personnel were sent to the scene to provide support to the victims.

On Tuesday, Tamaulipas state Governor Américo Villarreal announced that two of the victims had been found dead. The other two were delivered to the U.S. via an international bridge, in collaboration with the U.S. consulate in Matamoros.
