Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, has joined the right-wing chorus denying that a violent riot took place at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. This follows Fox News airing select frames of security footage provided by Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

On Monday night, Fox News host Tucker Carlson took to his show to present his take on the violent insurrection of the Capitol. Carlson used the footage to try and reinforce his false narrative that the Jan. 6 attack was nothing more than a bunch of peaceful protesters.

In response to the communications director of a Freedom Caucus-aligned organization who alleged that members of the House committee investigating the riot had lied, Elon took to his social media platform to write: “The public was misled. Besides misleading the public, they withheld evidence for partisan political reasons that sent people to prison for far more serious crimes than they committed.”

The footage aired Monday on Fox News was part of a debut of footage that Carlson said he would roll out after his team got exclusive access to over 40,000 hours of tape from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) last month.

Elon Musk’s comments have reignited the debate about the Capitol riot and the footage that was presented by Fox News. While Carlson and other right-wing commentators have argued that the footage does not show an insurrection or a riot in progress, many have argued that the footage was misleading and that the House committee investigating the riot had withheld evidence for partisan political reasons.
