A new report from leading cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike has revealed that China-linked hackers have been breaking into computer networks around the world to gather information. The report comes as the U.S. is increasingly concerned about the potential for Chinese parent company ByteDance to give the Chinese Communist Party access to user data through the popular app TikTok.

Shawn Henry, chief security officer for CrowdStrike, told CBS Mornings on Tuesday that the U.S. concerns about TikTok are “absolutely valid.” Henry noted that information isn’t being gathered solely through the app, but also through other activities.

CrowdStrike’s annual global threat report found that China-linked cyberespionage groups have been targeting 39 industries on nearly every continent. The techniques used by the hackers have become increasingly sophisticated as cybersecurity has improved.

“China wants to be the No. 1 superpower in the world and they have been targeting U.S. technology, U.S. personal information,” Henry said.

The report comes as the U.S. is taking steps to limit the potential for Chinese espionage. The Trump administration has proposed banning TikTok and other Chinese-owned apps, and the U.S. Senate has passed a bill that would require companies to disclose if they have ties to the Chinese government.
