Authorities in Northern California have charged a 66-year-old man with seven counts of murder and one count of attempted murder in connection with a shooting spree that left seven people dead and one injured.

Chunli Zhao entered a plea of not guilty at his arraignment on Thursday. The shootings occurred on January 23 at two mushroom farms in Half Moon Bay, California.

According to prosecutors, Zhao opened fire at the first farm, where he was employed, killing four co-workers and wounding another. He then drove to a second farm, where he had been fired in 2015, and shot to death three former co-workers.

The attack is believed to be the deadliest in San Mateo County’s history. Zhao is believed to have been a “coworker or former coworker” of the victims at each shooting.

The motive for the shootings is still under investigation. Zhao is being held without bail and is due back in court on March 18. If convicted, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
