A shocking incident occurred in the parking lot of the PSE&G energy company facility in Somerset County, New Jersey, when 51-year-old Councilman Russell Heller was shot by a former worker.

The Franklin Township Police Department responded to several 911 calls and found Heller shot in the parking lot of his office. Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald said detectives managed to track down the suspect, 58-year-old Gary T. Curtis, at a Bridgewater parking lot within a few hours. Curtis was found “suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Frank Roman, spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office, said the investigation revealed that the shooting of Heller was not politically connected with his elected office or political affiliation. Roman also said Heller’s shooting is not connected to the recent killing of another council member in New Jersey.

Heller’s death is the second time in about a week that a New Jersey council member was found shot to death in a car. The Franklin Township Police Department and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office are continuing to investigate the incident. No further information has been released at this time.
