Two former Arkansas law enforcement officers have been charged with civil rights violations in connection with the violent arrest of a man outside a convenience store that was caught on video and widely shared on social media.

The US Department of Justice said Tuesday that Levi White and Zackary King, former deputies with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department, were indicted on federal civil rights offenses for using excessive force while arresting 27-year-old Randal Worcester of Goose Creek, South Carolina on August 21 last year.

The incident was recorded on video by a bystander, which showed at least two officers punching and kneeling on Worcester outside a business. The 34-second video went viral, sparking outrage and prompting an investigation by the Arkansas State Police.

The findings of the investigation were given to a special prosecutor, a spokesman said Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022. The Justice Department said in a news release that the officers were charged with violating Worcester’s civil rights by using excessive force.

The incident has sparked a national conversation about police brutality and the use of excessive force by law enforcement officers. Worcester was released from the Crawford County Justice Center in Van Buren, Ark., on Aug. 22, 2022. It is unclear what the outcome of the case will be.
