California Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed his shock and sadness following three mass shootings in the state in the last 44 hours. On Saturday night, 11 people were killed in Monterey Park, and on Monday afternoon, four people were killed and one seriously injured in Half Moon Bay.

The suspect in the Half Moon Bay shooting, a farmworker identified as Zhao, is now facing seven counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. Zhao is believed to have acted alone when he entered the mushroom farm where he worked and opened fire.

The recent shootings have left 24 people dead and have added to the growing list of American communities affected by gun violence. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been 40 mass shootings in the US so far in 2023, more than at this point in any year on record.

Governor Newsom has called for action to address the gun violence epidemic, saying, “Only in America do we see this kind of carnage, this kind of chaos, this kind of disruption of communities and lives and confidence and sense of safety and belonging.” He has urged the public to come together to find solutions to the problem.

The victims of the shootings are in the thoughts of many, and the families and communities affected are in the hearts of all.
