An independent autopsy commissioned by the family of Tyre Nichols, a Black man who died after a traffic stop in Memphis, Tennessee, has revealed preliminary findings that he suffered “extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating,” according to attorneys for his family.

Attorney Ben Crump said in a statement that “preliminary findings indicate Tyre suffered extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating, and that his observed injuries are consistent with what the family and attorneys witnessed on the video of his fatal encounter with police on January 7, 2023.”

Nichols, 29, was stopped by Memphis Police Department officers on January 7th for alleged reckless driving. He was hospitalized and died three days later.

The family met with Memphis officials Monday to view video of the traffic stop, which Romanucci said showed “excessive force” by the officers.

The family has hired a forensic pathologist to review the case. The results of the independent autopsy are expected to be released in the coming weeks.

The family’s attorneys have called for an investigation into the incident and for the officers involved to be held accountable. They are also calling for a federal investigation into the Memphis Police Department’s use of force policies.
