Key takeaways:

  • First Lady Jill Biden underwent surgery last week to remove a non-cancerous growth from her left eyelid.
  • Surgeons also removed a cancerous lesion above her right eye and one on her chest.
  • The Biden administration is expected to soon release new childhood obesity guidelines.

First Lady Jill Biden underwent surgery last week to remove a non-cancerous growth from her left eyelid, according to Dr. Kevin O’Connor, physician to President Biden. The biopsy showed that the lesion was seborrheic keratosis, a very common, harmless, non-cancerous growth.

In addition to the lesion on her left eyelid, surgeons also removed a cancerous lesion above her right eye and one on her chest. The cancerous lesions were identified as basal cell carcinoma, the most common type of skin cancer, but also the most curable form.

President Joe Biden’s aides have not finalized a timeline for announcing a re-election bid, but have agreed on at least one benchmark: He won’t launch a 2024 campaign before delivering his State of the Union Address next month. According to two sources familiar with the discussions, “We want him to be a president at State of the Union, not a candidate.”

Deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement that “The president is honoring his promise to respect the independence of the Department of Justice and divorce it from politics.”

The Biden administration is also expected to soon release new childhood obesity guidelines, which are intended to help reduce the prevalence of obesity in children. The guidelines will focus on providing healthier food options, increasing physical activity, and reducing screen time.
