Former President Donald Trump has announced that he is in talks with Meta, the parent company of Facebook, to restore his account after it was blocked in response to the U.S. Capitol riot two years ago.
Trump’s campaign sent a letter to Meta on Tuesday, saying that the ban on his account has “dramatically distorted and inhibited the public discourse.” Trump himself said that if Meta took him back, it would help them greatly and he is “ok with that.”
In January 2021, Meta banned Trump “indefinitely” following the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. At the time, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the risk of allowing Trump to continue to use the platform after he undermined the peaceful transfer of power would be “too great.”
However, Meta’s expert-led oversight board later criticized the ban, saying that “it was not appropriate for Facebook to impose the indeterminate and standardless penalty of indefinite suspension.”
Trump now has access to his Twitter account again and is formally petitioning Meta to unblock his Facebook account. It remains to be seen if Meta will accept Trump’s request and if so, what terms and conditions will be attached.
