Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen announced on Thursday that former Governor Pete Ricketts will fill the vacant U.S. Senate seat of Ben Sasse, who officially resigned from Congress this week to become the president of the University of Florida.

Pillen said the process to fill the seat was taken “incredibly seriously” as the appointee needs to “represent the people” of Nebraska. He noted that 111 people applied for the seat.

Ricketts, a fellow Republican, was instrumental in helping Pillen get elected. He submitted his resignation last month, saying he would leave office on January 8, two years into his second term.

Sasse, a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump and his supporters, officially resigned from the Senate on Sunday.

Pillen said the appointee must reflect “values and ideology” that are “consistent with the people of Nebraska.” He added that he was confident Ricketts would “serve the people of Nebraska with distinction.”

Ricketts said he was honored to be appointed to the seat and that he was looking forward to “working with my colleagues in the Senate to advance the interests of Nebraska.”
