Prince Harry has made his first public statement on American television about his upcoming memoir, “Spare,” in an interview with Anderson Cooper that aired on 60 Minutes. In the interview, Harry spoke of his long-held belief of an unhealthy relationship between the British media and the royal family.

In an interview with British broadcaster ITV that aired Sunday, Harry described a campaign aimed at rehabilitating his father Charles’ then-girlfriend, Camilla. Harry alleged that the royal household engaged in damaging briefings to the media as part of this campaign.

Harry also spoke of his anger at what he believes is a callous and unaccountable media. In his book, Harry described the moment his father, Prince Charles, woke him up to tell him what had happened in August 1997, when Harry was at Balmoral Castle in Scotland with other members of the royal family.

In the book, Harry wrote, “He says, ‘They tried, darling boy. She began to play the long game.’ These phrases remain in my mind like darts on a board,” Cooper said. Harry was 12 when his mother, Princess Diana, was killed in a car crash in Paris.

Prince Harry’s memoir, “Spare,” is set to be released on November 12. In the book, Harry speaks of his life in the royal family, his relationship with his father, and his mother’s death. The memoir is expected to provide further insight into the inner workings of the British royal family.
