The Republican Party is in disarray after failing to elect a speaker in the House of Representatives for the first time in a century. After five hours and three rounds of voting on Tuesday, Rep. Kevin McCarthy failed to get the majority of votes needed to win.

Rep. James Comer, who is set to chair the House Oversight Committee, said he doesn’t think McCarthy is the “perfect” House speaker, but he’s “the right person to lead our conference at the right time.” He believes that both sides need to come to an agreement in order to move forward.

The House will likely try for a fourth time Wednesday to elect a speaker. Nothing else can happen in the House until a speaker is elected, and the small but growing faction of conservative MAGA-infused Republican lawmakers emphasized not just the divisions within the party, but also the rocky road ahead for McCarthy if he’s even elected speaker.

The lack of a speaker has caused chaos in the Republican Party, with no rules in place for the House and certainly no committees. Comer told “CBS Mornings” on Wednesday that “We agree we need a speaker,” and both sides need to come up with some type of agreement in order to move forward.

It remains to be seen whether the House will be able to elect a speaker on Wednesday, and if McCarthy will be the one chosen. The Republican Party is in a precarious position, and it is up to both sides to come to an agreement in order to move forward.
