Tennis great Martina Navratilova has revealed that she has been diagnosed with two forms of cancer. The 18-time Grand Slam singles champion and member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame said in a statement released Monday that she was diagnosed with Stage 1 throat cancer and an unrelated form of breast cancer.
Navratilova, 66, said she first noticed a sign of cancer during the Women’s Tennis Association finals in Fort Worth, Texas, last November. She said she noticed an enlarged lymph node in her neck and went to the doctor for a biopsy.
“This double whammy is serious but still fixable, and I’m hoping for a favorable outcome,” Navratilova told Tennis.com. She said her prognosis is good and she will start treatment this month.
Navratilova is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. She won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, 31 major women’s doubles titles and 10 major mixed doubles titles. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2000.
Navratilova has been an advocate for health and wellness throughout her career. She has encouraged people to get regular checkups and to stay active. She has also been an advocate for LGBT rights, and was one of the first professional athletes to come out as gay in 1981.
