George Santos, the newly elected congressman from New York’s 12th District, is facing multiple investigations into potential financial irregularities, as well as questions about his background. The Federal Election Commission records show that Santos’ campaign made 37 expenditures of $199.99 each, which experts say may have been attempts to evade detection. The Eastern District of New York is probing his finances, as well as inconsistencies in his résumé. In addition, the Nassau County District Attorney is investigating potential criminal activity related to his campaign. Santos has admitted to fabricating and “embellishing” several claims about his background involving his education and work history, and has apologized for his actions. Several of his campaign donors have expressed shock and betrayal, and some have said they cannot support him again. While some Republicans have dropped their support for Santos, others remain loyal. The outcome of these investigations remains to be seen.
