France has reported 40 drownings since Thursday as a severe heat wave drives people into rivers and other unsupervised waters. Record heat has disrupted schools, transportation, landmarks and labor across several European countries.

France banned public drinking in red-alert heat zones and closed hundreds of schools as temperatures neared 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Spain, Italy, Britain and Germany also faced heat warnings, event cancellations and emergency measures.
