Vermont State Police Urge Residents to Stay Home and Evacuate Homes as Floodwaters Approach

Vermont State Police are warning residents to stay home due to dangerous storms and flooding in the Hudson Valley of New York, which has already claimed the life of one woman. Emergency crews have been called to conduct rescues and more than 500 National Guard members have been deployed to assist. The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for much of the Northeast U.S. and State Police are urging people to take the necessary precautions and to never drive or walk through floodwaters.

Three men have died after falling through the ice due to abnormally warm weather, prompting the cancellation of the 43rd annual Islands Ice Fishing Derby on Vermont’s Lake Champlain. The Grand Isle County Sheriff’s Department issued a request for the derby to be cancelled “effective immediately” on Saturday, and the Vermont State Police are continuing to investigate the deaths.

On Tuesday evening, a fight broke out during a seventh- and eighth-grade boys basketball game between Alburgh and St. Albans, resulting in the death of a 60-year-old man. The Vermont State Police are actively investigating the incident, and Jay Nichols of The Vermont Principals’ Association and the Alburgh School District have released statements expressing their condolences and commitment to providing a safe environment.
