FDA Advisory Committee Gives Vote of Confidence for Full Approval of Pfizer’s COVID-19 Pill, Paxlovid

The FDA's independent advisory committee has voted in favor of full approval of Pfizer's COVID-19 pill, Paxlovid, for the treatment of mild to moderate Covid-19 in adults at high risk for severe disease. The drug, a combination of nirmatrelvir and ritonavir, has been available under emergency use authorization since December 2021 and has been used by over 8 million people in the US. The FDA is expected to make a decision on full approval of the drug in the coming weeks.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed new guidelines that would ease restrictions on blood donations from gay and bisexual men, doing away with the three-month abstinence requirement. The proposal has been welcomed by gay rights groups, and if finalized, it would be the latest FDA move to broaden donor eligibility and potentially boost the U.S. blood supply. The FDA is now seeking public comment on the proposed guidelines before deciding whether to finalize the new rules.
