Eric Garcetti Confirmed as U.S. Ambassador to India, Strengthening U.S.-India Relations

After two years without a permanent ambassador to India, the U.S. Senate has confirmed former Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti for the role. Despite pushback from some Democrats due to allegations of sexual harassment and bullying by one of Garcetti's former aides, enough Republicans backed him to give the U.S. its first permanent ambassador to India under President Joe Biden. This confirmation is expected to further strengthen the ties between the two countries.

Russia Attempts to Recover Fragments of U.S. Surveillance Drone Shot Down in Black Sea

Russia is attempting to recover the fragments of a U.S. surveillance drone that was shot down in the Black Sea on Tuesday. Nikolai Patrushev, the secretary of Russia’s Security Council, said Russia will try to get the wreckage of the American MQ-9 drone to study it. The U.S. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said in a statement that the drone was operating in accordance with international law and its flight path was in no way a threat to Russia. Tensions between the two countries have been raised and the U.S. has called for an investigation into the incident.

Sarah Jane Cavanaugh, a former social worker at a Rhode Island veterans' hospital, has been sentenced to nearly six years in federal prison for fraudulently posing as a decorated Marine Corps veteran with cancer and collecting nearly $300,000 in benefits, charitable contributions, and donations. She was exposed when a charity she applied to for funds became suspicious and started checking her background. Her sentence serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying the credentials of those claiming to be veterans, and of the consequences of fraudulently posing as a veteran.

Governors Call on Pharmacy Retail Companies to Clarify Plans to Dispense Mifepristone for Medication Abortion

Fourteen Democratic governors have called on major pharmacy retail companies to clarify their plans to dispense mifepristone, a drug used for medication abortion, in response to recent media reports. This call has been met with opposition from a coalition of anti-abortion groups, who have requested a preliminary injunction to take mifepristone off the market nationwide. If access to mifepristone is halted, it could affect millions of individuals in states where medication abortion is lawfully dispensed. The issue of access to abortion medication has become increasingly politicized, and it remains to be seen how the pharmacy retail companies will respond.

On Tuesday, a Russian fighter jet struck a U.S. surveillance drone over the Black Sea, resulting in the U.S. bringing down the unmanned aerial vehicle. This incident has raised tensions between the two countries and appears to mark the first time since the height of the Cold War that a U.S. aircraft was brought down after being hit by a Russian warplane.
