Breakthrough in Gilgo Beach Murders: Karen Vergata Identified After 24 Years

Investigators have identified the remains of Karen Vergata, found near Gilgo Beach on Long Island in 1996, as the latest breakthrough in the Gilgo Beach murders investigation. The investigation, which has been ongoing for over a decade, has identified most of the eleven sets of human remains found in or near Ocean Parkway since 2010, but some remain unnamed. The Suffolk County Police Department is asking anyone with information to contact them.

Police have executed a search warrant at a second storage unit in Amityville, Long Island, New York, in connection with the ongoing Gilgo Beach murder case. Rex Heuermann, a Manhattan architect living in Massapequa Park, was arrested in connection with the case on Friday and placed on suicide watch. Investigators have confiscated an arsenal of nearly 300 guns, framed pictures, and a child-like doll from Heuermann's home. It is unclear who rented the two storage units.

Eleven sets of remains have been found in the area, but it is unclear if the suspect is connected to all of them.
