California and Nevada Residents Warned of Potential Flooding Due to Heavy Precipitation and Rapid Snow Melt.

Millions of people in California and Nevada are under flood watches due to heavy precipitation and rapid snow melt below 5,000 feet. Downtown Fresno is forecast to get 3 inches of rain from Thursday evening to Saturday morning, and Terri Mejorado, the Fresno County Emergency Services Director, warned of the warm water on top of the snow causing it to melt. Residents are advised to take precautions and be aware of their surroundings as the storm is expected to last through the weekend.

Winter Storm Brings Dangerous Ice Accumulations and Road Closures to Parts of the South and Central US

A winter storm bringing a triple threat of ice, sleet and snow to parts of the South and central US has caused officials to close roads and schools and cancel over 1,700 flights. One person has been confirmed dead in a 10-car pileup in south Austin, and two Texas law officers have been seriously injured in crashes. People in the affected areas are urged to take extra precautions when traveling.

California has seen a significant reduction in drought intensity in the past several weeks due to recent rain and snow, with the extreme drought designation nearly disappearing. However, the state is still in a severe drought and needs to continue to receive rain and snow in order to further reduce the drought intensity.
