Smiths Station, Alabama is in mourning after the death of their mayor, F.L. "Bubba" Copeland, who died by suicide two days after the conservative news blog 1819 News published a story with photos of him allegedly wearing women's clothing and makeup. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office reported that Copeland died in front of police officers who were performing a welfare check, and the community is now coming together to remember Copeland and to support his family.

Nearly four months after Hurricane Ian hit Florida, the body of James “Denny” Hurst, 72, has been found in a sunken sailboat off Fort Myers Beach. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office found the boat, named "Good Girl," in Matanzas Pass and said Hurst was last known to have been on board when the storm hit. He was the last known person still missing in Lee County after the Category 4 hurricane, and the Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
