Rapper Trugoy the Dove of De La Soul Passes Away at 54

Rapper Trugoy the Dove of the Long Island hip hop trio De La Soul has passed away at the age of 54 after battling congestive heart failure. He was part of the hip-hop tribute at the Grammy Awards last week, and tributes have poured in from fans and fellow artists alike. De La Soul is widely credited with helping to bring alternative hip hop to the mainstream, having released nine studio albums, including their 1989 debut 3 Feet High and Rising, which is widely considered one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time.

Kim Petras and Sam Smith made history at the Grammy Awards Sunday night, becoming the first out nonbinary and trans woman to win the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their song “Unholy.” Petras thanked the “incredible transgender legends” before her, while Smith graciously allowed Petras to accept the award, recognizing her history-making moment. Petras’s win is a testament to the progress the LGBTQ community has made in recent years, and a reminder of the importance of recognizing and celebrating the accomplishments of trans and nonbinary artists.
