On Saturday, U.S. Capitol Police responded to a fire alarm pulled by Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman of New York, causing an evacuation of the Cannon office building. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy called for Bowman to be punished, comparing it to the Jan 6 rioters, and an investigation into what happened and why continues. Bowman has yet to comment on the incident, and it remains to be seen what the outcome of the investigation will be and how Bowman will be punished, if at all.

U.S. Capitol Police Lockdown Russell Senate Office Building in Response to Report of Active Shooter

U.S. Capitol Police locked down and evacuated the Russell Senate Office Building on Wednesday afternoon in response to a report of an active shooter. Videos posted to Twitter showed people evacuating the cluster of three Senate office buildings located on the north side of the Capitol complex. After a thorough search, no injuries and no shooter were located and the lockdown has since been lifted. Capitol Police are continuing to investigate the incident and are asking anyone with information to contact them.

Man Pleads Guilty to Assaulting Rep. Angie Craig in Elevator of Washington Apartment Building

Kendrid Hamlin has pleaded guilty to assaulting Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) in an elevator, as well as two counts of assault on law enforcement officers. He could face up to 11 years in prison, and a sentencing hearing is scheduled for October. Craig has spoken out about her experience and expressed gratitude for the guilty plea, hoping it will bring closure to the difficult chapter.

Former U.S. Capitol Police officer Michael Riley was sentenced to 120 days of home incarceration and two years of probation for offering advice to a rioter and deleting messages when contacted by the FBI. Logan Barnhart, a 42-year-old pipelayer from Michigan, was sentenced to three years in prison for assaulting police at the Capitol during the attack. Judge Amy Berman Jackson took into account Riley's job loss, health issues, and lack of criminal history in delivering the sentence, and noted the seriousness of Barnhart's actions and the need to deter similar behavior in the future.
