Tragic Loss of Texas Man, James Bernard Hendricks, in Arches National Park

James Bernard Hendricks, 66, of Austin, Texas, was found dead in Arches National Park in Utah on August 1, believed to have died from heatstroke while on a trip to spread his father's ashes. Rangers found his vehicle at a trailhead parking lot after he was reported overdue, and his sisters believe he became disoriented from a combination of heat, dehydration and high altitude. Hendricks had documented his journey on social media prior to his death, and his family is asking for privacy during this difficult time.

45 Inches of Snow Falls in Sierra, Widespread Snowfall Expected Across Rockies and Plains, Flooding and Power Outages Reported

Heavy snowfall over the weekend in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and northern Plains caused multiple water rescues, road closures, and power outages, resulting in the deaths of at least two people. In Sacramento County, emergency crews responded to fallen trees and disabled vehicles in the flood waters, while US Highway 101 was closed in South San Francisco due to flooding and high tides. More wet weather is expected in the West this week from storms brewing in the Gulf of Alaska.

California Storm System Brings Flooding, Landslides, and Evacuation Warnings

A powerful storm system is bringing flooding, landslides, and heavy rains and snow to California, with the National Weather Service issuing a warning for the upper elevations of the Sierra from south of Yosemite National Park to north of Lake Tahoe. The Susan River is forecast to rise significantly, potentially affecting homes, roads, and bridges, while Sacramento fire officials plan to broadcast evacuation announcements from a helicopter and a boat. Humboldt County, which was hit by an earthquake last week, is also seeing roadways beginning to flood, with a bridge potentially closing again if the Eel River gets too high.
