Trump said U.S. and Iranian officials will meet Tuesday in Doha after weekend strikes around the Strait of Hormuz tested a fragile ceasefire. Iran has not confirmed technical talks, while officials continue to dispute control of the waterway and the release of frozen assets.
The U.S. military struck Iranian missile, drone and radar sites after a drone hit the Singapore-flagged Ever Lovely in the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump called the attack a “foolish violation” of a newly signed ceasefire agreement.
Ships continued to pass through the Strait of Hormuz after the Ever Lovely was struck near Oman, while Iran warned vessels not to use routes it has not approved. The dispute has become a key test of the U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding on safe passage through the waterway.
IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said inspections in Iran will take place under a preliminary US-Iran agreement. Tehran says access to damaged nuclear sites and materials depends on a final deal and sanctions relief.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is visiting Pakistan after U.S.-Iran talks in Switzerland produced a 60-day roadmap toward a possible war-ending deal. Disputes have already emerged over nuclear inspections and Israel’s freedom to act in Lebanon.
The United States and Iran say they have reached a tentative agreement to end the war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and halt fighting in Lebanon. The deal is expected to be signed Friday in Switzerland, but nuclear issues, sanctions relief and Israel’s role remain unresolved.
Trump threatened new strikes on Iran and the seizure of Kharg Island as U.S.-Iran fighting widened across Gulf states and the Gulf of Oman. Iran said the latest U.S. attacks made the ceasefire “practically meaningless,” while mediation efforts by Qatar and Pakistan continued.
