Two men have died in similar circumstances after leaving popular Hell's Kitchen gay bars in New York City, prompting an investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney's office. Shane Hoskins, 31, has been charged with two counts of grand larceny and one count of identity theft, accused of drugging and then stealing from two people in April 2022. Prosecutors allege that Hoskins and four unidentified co-conspirators would approach intoxicated people outside bars or nightclubs in Manhattan, engage them in conversation and then offer them drugs to incapacitate them and facilitate the theft of their property. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the NYPD.
Two gay men, John Umberger and Julio Ramirez, were found dead with their bank accounts drained after leaving New York City bars last year. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the deaths as homicides due to "drug-facilitated theft." The mother of Umberger believes her son was drugged and robbed before being found dead. The police are investigating if the deaths are connected to a string of robberies and assaults in Hell's Kitchen.
