The United States and Iran have electronically signed a memorandum intended to halt the war and launch 60 days of talks toward a final agreement. The document includes sanctions relief, nuclear commitments, Strait of Hormuz provisions and a proposed $300 billion reconstruction plan for Iran.
Trump said an initial agreement with Iran is scheduled to be signed Sunday and would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but Iran’s Foreign Ministry said no signing would occur that day. The two sides have signaled a deal may be near while offering conflicting accounts of its timing and terms.
U.S. forces intercepted Iranian missiles and drones aimed at the Strait of Hormuz, Kuwait and Bahrain as talks with Tehran stalled. Fighting in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah is further complicating efforts to end the wider conflict.
