Smith County Sheriff’s Office Investigates Potential Homicide of 25-Year-Old Black Man, Rasheem Carter

The Smith County Sheriff's Office in Mississippi is now investigating the death of Rasheem Carter, a 25-year-old Black man, as a potential homicide. Carter had warned his mother that he was being chased by white men hurling racial slurs shortly before his death, and Smith County Sheriff Joel Houston has defended his initial determination that no evidence pointed to homicide. Carter's family and friends are still mourning the loss of their loved one, and are asking anyone with information about Carter's death to come forward.

Kinder Morgan Resumes Operations After Fuel Pipeline Leak in California

Kinder Morgan, a Houston-based pipeline operator, has resumed operations at its California facility after a leak was discovered on Thursday. The source of the leak was isolated and no injuries or fire were reported. The company is working with local, state and federal agencies to investigate the cause of the leak and is also working with customers to ensure fuel supply needs are met.

65+ Democratic Leaders Urge President Biden to Select Atlanta as Host City for 2024 Democratic National Convention

More than 65 current and former Democratic US senators, members of the US House, governors, mayors and legislators from a dozen Southern states have sent a letter to President Joe Biden and Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison, urging them to select Atlanta as the host city for the 2024 Democratic National Convention. The letter argues that the choice would solidify the party's gains in Georgia and demonstrate commitment to the entire region, as well as thank the people of Georgia for their support in the 2020 election. Houston's mayor has also joined Atlanta's bid, adding his name to the letter in the hopes that their message will be heard and that Atlanta will be chosen as the host city.

Tornado Causes Significant Damage in Gulf Coast Communities East of Houston

A powerful storm system swept through the Gulf Coast on Tuesday, bringing with it a tornado that caused significant damage in Pasadena, a city southeast of Houston. Commercial buildings, homes, and power lines were damaged, and several vehicles were flipped over or otherwise damaged. Utility poles and power lines were downed, leaving many without power, and emergency crews were dispatched to the area to assess the damage and help those affected. The National Weather Service has urged residents to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions.
