On New Year's Day, a series of powerful earthquakes struck the Sea of Japan, prompting a tsunami warning from the Japan Meterological Agency (JMA). An avalanche on Mount Hakuba Norikura in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, on Sunday afternoon resulted in the death of two skiers, one of whom was an American pro freeskier.
